2009 Cross Country Teams Off and Running

The 2009 Cross Country teams will kickoff their first meet of the season this Saturday, August 29th, at the Spring Hill football stadium. The boy’s team returns veterans Dylan Rogers and Cory Jones. Senior Dylan Rogers is a 2008 State qualifier and looks to compete in Round Rock in November. The boy’s team has some fresh faces with several new runners. Sophomore, Thien Vuong and freshmen Austin Jordan, Jimmie McNew, and Clay Hunter are running Cross Country for the first time this season. The boys team will be inexperienced to start the season but will have plenty of time and competition to prepare for district and regional competition in October and November.

The girls team return several experienced runners from last season squad that finished fourth at regional competition in Humble. Sydney Hamm is the lone senior runner and also qualified for the State in Round Rock. Juniors, Jessica McNew, Shandee Lynn and Carmyn Gibson also return as well as sophomores Brianne Mathews, Elizabeth Horne, and Paige Maly. The girls have their eye on Round Rock, and will be a contender as a team to compete for a chance to represent Region II at state competition in November. The rookies on this year’s team are Junior Brittani Pfau and freshman Lauren Berry. As the season progresses, I will introduce you to the new faces in the program and their interests.

Both teams will travel to Spring Hill this Saturday for their first race of the season. The course covers grassy and hilly terrain and will a challenging 5k course early in the season. Race will begin at 8:00am with the girl’s varsity race followed by the boy’s varsity race at 8:30. The junior varsity boys and girls will compete at 9:00 and 9:30.
