The Roughneck and Ladyneck Cross Country teams kicked off the 2018 season at Union Grove on Saturday, August 25th. The weather was hot and steamy, and the course dry and hilly, however these factors didn’t stop the runners from turning out excellent personal performances. Olivia Sipes and Cece Hernandez started their final campaign with 3rd and 7th place finishes in the Varsity girls’ race with times of 13:31 and 13:56. Morgan Benge raced in her debut Varsity meet in 14 minutes flat for an eighth place finish. The JV girls’ race saw strong performances from rookies, Baylee Lyke, 2nd place in 14:49, and Abby Quesenberry, 10th in 15:33. The Varsity girls’ race saw 133 runners compete and in the JV girls’ race 167 competitors crossed the finish line. The JV boys’ race saw a quartet of rookies take to the course. Freshman Nathan Green led all Roughnecks with a 20th place finish in 22:14. Green was followed by Sophomore John Langley in 23rd with a time of 22:31. Alberto Soto, also a freshman, finished the 5k course in 23:38 for 42nd out of 157 runners. The teams are idle this weekend and will return to action September 8th at the Tyler Lee Invitational at UT Tyler. This is traditional a fast course with tons of competitors.
